Spot accepts pets of any age, includes exam fees, and in most states skips the separate orthopedic waiting period that other insurers impose. Its range of deductibles and limits lets you build a plan precisely to budget.
The short version
Spot is the insurer we point owners toward when their situation does not fit the default mould. It enrolls pets from eight weeks old with no upper age limit, which matters enormously if you are adopting a senior dog or only now realizing your ten-year-old cat is uninsured. It offers annual limits from $2,500 all the way to unlimited, deductibles from $100 to $1,000, and three reimbursement levels.
The second reason Spot ranks in our top three is orthopedic coverage. In most states Spot does not impose a separate waiting period for orthopedic conditions such as cruciate ligament tears. After the standard fourteen days, a knee injury is covered just like any other illness or accident, while most competitors make you wait six months.
Coverage: comprehensive by default
The accident and illness plan includes exam fees, diagnostics, surgery, hospitalization, prescription medication, hereditary and congenital conditions, behavioral therapy, alternative treatments such as acupuncture, and microchip implantation. Dental illness is covered for teeth that have been examined in the prior year. That is a fuller base policy than Lemonade's and comparable to Embrace's.
Spot also sells an accident-only plan, which is a reasonable choice for owners on a tight budget or for very senior pets whose premiums for full coverage would be prohibitive. Two optional preventive care packages cover routine items like dental cleanings, vaccines and flea prevention up to set annual amounts.
Pricing: flexible, but watch the age curve
Our sample quote for a two-year-old mixed-breed dog started at $29 a month, and a comparable cat at $17. At younger ages Spot sits just above Lemonade and below Embrace. The flexibility cuts both ways: choosing a $5,000 annual limit with a $1,000 deductible produces a strikingly low premium but exposes you to large out-of-pocket costs in a bad year.
Our year-over-year tracking shows Spot premiums rising more steeply than average after age eight. That does not erase its value for seniors, since it is often the only comprehensive option available to them, but it does mean you should budget for meaningful renewals.
Claims experience
Claims can be filed in the app or online. Our test claims were reimbursed in about ten business days, with simple claims sometimes faster. Spot does not offer direct vet payment as standard, so you pay the clinic upfront and wait for reimbursement by direct deposit or check.
We found the claims portal clear and the status updates helpful. Spot asks for records from the previous twelve months with a first claim; providing them at enrollment avoids delays later.
Exclusions and waiting periods
The fourteen-day waiting period applies to both accidents and illnesses. That is the one area where Spot is weaker than Lemonade and Embrace, which cover accidents after two days. A dog who eats a sock in week one will not be covered. Pre-existing conditions are excluded, but Spot will consider a curable condition covered once your pet has gone 180 days without symptoms or treatment, a shorter window than Embrace's twelve months.
Cosmetic procedures, breeding costs and conditions from neglect are excluded, as with every insurer we review.
Who it suits
Spot is our top pick for senior pets, for large and athletic breeds with a high risk of knee injuries, and for owners who want to dial in an exact premium. If your priority is the lowest possible price for a young, healthy pet, Lemonade will usually beat it. If you want the fastest claims, look at Lemonade or Healthy Paws.
